What Innovative & Sophisticated user interaction means to me
For something to be innovative for me, it has to be something completely new, which has never been seen before, or taking something which already exists and add something to it which improves it, or puts a different angle on something. For example the Wii took the controllers of other popular gaming consoles and then added motion sensing to them, so that the user had much greater control over what was happening on the screen & actually had to move around instead of just pressing buttons. Again with the Wii, the Wii Fit is another example of innovative user interaction as it makes use of balance to interact with numerous games such as skiing and ball-maze puzzles.
Innovative user interaction does not just have to be the physical way in which the user can control it, it could also be the way in which they actually have to use it, for example in older racing games, there was usually just an option in the menu screen to enter a championship, etc, and you never actually had a character, and it was always just a case of win or lose, however now, many games usually follow the story of a character, where you are basically living their racing career, or instead of following one route up, you can usually choose your own path to being the best, and if you don't win a race it'd set you back a bit rather than resulting you loosing altogether.
Sophisticated user interaction for me means that everything has been thought through and it makes it more interesting for the user as they get unexpected things, i.e. it has much more than one obvious function, for example the game Pong, is not a very sophisticated game and only has very simple user interaction, to improve it & make the user interaction better you could use motion sensing to move the bats, so that they would actually have to move to hit the ball back, you could also make it a lot more like real tennis, adding tournaments with games & sets etc, and then to make it even more sophisticated for the user, you add in player attributes, which would then actually make your in-game player more skilful. All of this would make the user interaction much more sophisticated, as now instead of just trying to hit the ball back to the other side, the user would be going for points to win the tournament & upgrade their player, so that they could win even more.
For me, when the user interaction is innovative & sophisticated, it will keep me playing or interacting for a lot longer than if it was just very simple, & will also be very likely to make me keep coming back again and again for more, as well as telling other people how good it is.
